Home Solar Electricity

DIY Solar Power
For Residential Solar Energy

Generating home solar electricity has become feasible in many areas.

If you have an energy efficient home, and live in an area with lots of sunshine, you can build your own solar panels and provide DIY solar power for a large portion of your energy needs.

And the costs of getting into green alternative energy are coming down as well.

Many state governments (and the federal government) are offering tax rebates or grants to help you get started producing your own green energy at home.

Home solar panels can provide residential solar energy.

Solar Energy for Homes

Before you run out to purchase solar panels for your home, there are a few things to consider:
  • How much electricity do you need? – Making your home as energy efficient as possible is the very first step. After you have done so, you need to determine exactly how much energy you use (or need). What is your average daily electricity usage?

  • How much electricity can you produce? - Different home solar panels produce different amounts of energy. You will need to know how much electricity can be produced, using the solar panels that you plan to use. You will need to do this step—whether you are going to buy ready-made solar panels, purchase solar panel kits or build your own solar panel.

  • How much sun? – You’ll need to understand how much sunshine your area gets. There are charts that will help you with this. But the important thing to remember is that, you need to have enough sunshine to support the generation of electricity from your home solar panels—year-round!

  • Your habits - While generating home solar electricity is a fine solution to having green energy for your home, keep in mind that you might have to endure some lifestyle changes. For example, if you live in an area that is very hot in the summer, don’t count on having air conditioning all summer, using your home solar panels. They simply won’t be able to produce enough electricity to support that kind of load!

Home Solar Energy Types

There are 3 types of solar panel systems that are used to provide solar electricity for homes:
  • Grid-tied system - This is a hybrid system, where you use the electricity provided by your home solar panels. However, you are still tied into the electric company and, if you need more electricity, you use the power supply from the electric company.

  • Grid-tie with battery backup - With this solar panel system, you collect electricity from your home solar panels, and the electricity is stored in a battery bank. Any excess electricity is sent back to the electric company through your meter. This may be hypothetical, as solar panels do not provide nearly as much electricity as wind turbines—which are more likely to produce extra electricity.

  • Stand alone system - Using this solar panel system, you disconnect from the electric company—or perhaps you live in a remote area where there is no power company service. In either case, you will need a large bank of batteries to store electricity that you produce with your solar panels.

Home solar electricity, using residential solar panels, is not difficult to set up—after you’ve done your homework.

There is a financial investment up front, but, once you’ve installed your home solar panels, there is very little maintenance, and the solar panels should keep on producing home electricity for many years to come…
