Benefits of Alternative Energy
Alternative Energy Benefits

The benefits of alternative energy reach beyond just saving money on your electric bills.

Alternative energy benefits nations as well.

Alternative energy is energy that comes from renewable energy such as water, solar, wind, and bio-fuels.

Currently the primary energy sources for most of us come from nonrenewable energy sources such as fossil fuels. Not only will fossil fuels be depleted in the near future, but also using them to generate energy is harmful to the environment.

Alternative Energy Benefits

Here are some of the benefits of alternative energy:
  • Local energy production - There are two advantages to this. First, energy is lost as it is transported over distances, so generating electricity in your backyard saves energy. Second, we reduce dependence on foreign fossil fuels like oil.

  • Political reasons - There is always tension between Middle Eastern countries and the U.S. Making our own energy cuts down on our purchases from governments that are not friendly.

  • Cleaner environment - Alternative energy or green energy is a cleaner energy.

  • Cost - Making your own energy--eventually becomes a way to have FREE energy!

  • Renewable resources - Alternative energy is a renewable resource, and we don't have to worry that we will run out of it!

Weighing Benefits of Alternative Energy
and Costs

The process is much like considerations between renting a home and financing a home.

Renting a home is like buying electricity from the major electric companies, whereas buying an alternative energy source is like financing something that is guaranteed to pay off in the future.

Additionally, homeowners get another benefit when installing alternative energy.

In almost any area, the addition of solar panels or wind generation systems actually raises the value of a home.

As you can, the overall benefits of alternative energy use are huge.

However, to choose which type of alternative energy system to use, one needs to understand each source and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Wind as Alternative Energy

Wind energy systems are some of the cheapest alternative energy systems available. Wind energy is clean and readily abundant just about anywhere on the globe.

As long as the wind is blowing the wind energy generation system is generating electricity.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the cost of wind power hovers around four cents per kilowatt-hour, which is one-third to half the price of coal generated electricity.

To generate enough electricity to run a household, you may need several wind turbines or windmills.

Water and Bio-Fuels
As Alternative Energy

Water, or hydro-power, is generated based on the flow of water. The problem is that to harness water power, a person or company has to live near moving water.

Bio-fuel (to replace gasoline) can be generated from switch-grass or vegetable oils, and it can be made by anyone at home.

Solar as Alternative Energy

Finally, the most abundant alternative energy source is solar power.

Solar energy cells generate electricity as long as the sun is shining. Additionally, heat collection grids can be used to heat homes or heat water, much as a water heater does.

A solar energy setup is easily obtained and can be scaled. This means that a homeowner can invest a little at a time and let each solar cell pay for itself.

With the addition of a battery storage system, solar energy can provide a good portion of your green home energy!

Another benefit of alternative energy is, a little over time and your energy bills will virtually disappear.
